GETTING HERE

Vivanta Meghalaya, Shillong

Located just outside Shillong along the highway to Guwahati, this shimmering reservoir is locally known as Barapani (meaning big water) and poetically referred to as the Lake of Tears, owing to a local legend. Popular for scenic stops, picnics and photo opportunities, it offers expansive views and a beautiful play of light across the water. From speedboat rides and paddle boating to picnics, there’s much to do here. 

Umiam Lake

Known locally as ‘end of the hills’, Laitlum Canyon offers sweeping views from an altitude of 1800 metres above sea level. The mesmerising landscape resembles the rolling highlands of northern Europe and is best experienced on foot, with plenty of stops to take in the vistas. The destination offers one of the city’s best spots for an unforgettable sunset. 

Laitlum Canyon

Standing at 1,962 metres, Shillong Peak is the city’s highest point with a viewing platform that offers a panoramic perspective of the city, the surrounding hills and even the sight of Bangladesh on a clear day. The area includes a telescope point and traditional attire rentals for photography. Local legend has it that the peak - part of the Air Force radar station zone - is guarded by U Shulong, a mystical deity. 

Shillong Peak

Also known as Pollock Lake or Nan Polok, this man-made, horseshoe-shaped lake nestled near the majestic Raj Bhavan (Governor House) is surrounded by a walking path and flowerbeds. The charming wooden bridge and grassy slopes offer great views. You can enjoy paddle boating in summer and admire the cherry blossoms during autumn. There is also a botanical garden for horticulture enthusiasts. 

Ward’s Lake

Formerly known as Lady Hydari Park, this popular destination comprises gardens, a small zoo and a museum. Expect shaded paths, quaint gazebos, a lake with pelicans and food stalls near the entrance offering local snacks. There are playgrounds for children and open spaces for recreational activities. 

Phan Nonglait Park

One of India’s oldest, largest and prettiest natural golf courses, referred to as ‘Gleneagle of the East’, is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by pine and rhododendron forests. The 18-hole course is open to golfers as well as casual visitors. The streets outside are lined with local vendors selling delicious snacks.
