Vivanta Thane Mumbai

One of Thane’s most popular spots, this Butterfly Garden is loved by the young and old alike. Established in the early 1970s, this garden is home to more than 100 butterfly species.

ELVIS BUTTERFLY GARDEN

This hidden gem is a tranquil beach with golden sands that stretch for 8 kilometres, calm waters, and an ancient and atmospheric Portuguese fort in its embrace.
Kelva Beach’s soft, powdery sand, sparkling blue waters and lush Casuarina trees make it a very photogenic picnic spot. Kelva Fort guards the Southern end of the Beach. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it is surrounded by sea on three sides. Though battered by time and tide, Kelva Fort is still a sight to behold with its crumbling stones whispering stories of maritime glory.

Nestled in the lap of the Yeoor Hills, the Upvan Lake is Thane’s oasis of calm. A statue of Lord Shiva makes this picturesque spot even more divine.
This manmade lake adds a splash of freshness to the urbane sophistication of Thane. Surrounded by walking trails, a jogging track and verdant greenery, this lake attracts locals and tourist in equal measure. A statue of Lord Shiva in the centre of the lake and a Ganesha Temple add to the spiritual charm of the area. Upvan Lake is also famous for hosting the very popular Sanskruti Arts Festival.

The original Tansa Dam is exactly 100 years old. Over time, the dam has grown in stature, rising higher and higher, helping create one of Thane’s most biodiverse environments.
One of the seven sources of drinking water supply in Mumbai, the dam and the adjoining lake can also quench your thirst for fresh, bracing breezes, unspoilt beauty, winding hikes and trails, and a sense of abiding calm. Blessed with diverse flora and fauna, the region is rich in biodiversity and home to a large number of birds, ensuring that every visit to Tansa Lake will be accompanied by Mother Nature’s own orchestra.

The brackish waters of Thane Creek, one of India’s largest creeks, attract many migrating birds, the most famous of which is undoubtedly the graceful and gorgeous Flamingo.
Thane Creek, one of the Marine Ecoregions of the World (MEOW), also makes the list of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs). The Creek’s brackish (a mix of fresh and saline) waters promote the growth of mangrove forests, attracting a vast number of fish, crustaceans, butterflies, and birds, including the Greater and Lesser Flamingos. When these elegant birds gather around, the Creek wears a cloak of pink that’s a sight to behold.

Ghodbunder Fort is one of the oldest and most famous forts in Thane district. It is a timekeeper of almost 500 years of history – from the Portuguese to the Marathas.
Built in the 16th century AD, Ghodbunder Fort derives its name from Ghod (meaning horse) and Bundhar (meaning fort) as the Portuguese and Arabs traded horses within its ramparts. Today, among the Fort’s magnificent ruins, one can see the remains of an ancient Portuguese church and many crumbling rooms that reflect the splendour of the Marathas who annexed this Fort from the Portuguese.
