One of the largest monasteries in Asia, Tawang Monastery is home to over 300 monks and an 8-metre Buddha statue. Founded over 400 years ago, the monastery offers spectacular views of the valley and houses ornate paintings and prayer halls. 

Tawang Monastery

Located just outside the town, Urgelling Monastery is known as the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. Built in 1487, this small but historically significant site is a quiet spot for reflection and is an important pilgrimage destination. It is often included in lists of must-visit places to see in Tawang. 

Urgelling Monastery

Located on a hilltop, the Giant Buddha Statue stands nearly 9.15 metres high and overlooks the Tawang valley. The open site combines spiritual significance with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and river landscapes. Visiting it is one of the most culturally and spiritually enriching things to do in Tawang.

Built in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives during the 1962 Indo-China war, the Tawang War Memorial includes an open stupa, museum halls and an evening light and sound show depicting local history.

Tawang’s markets – Old Market, Nehru Market and New Market – offer local crafts, woollens and traditional garments. Browse souvenirs at the government handicrafts emporium and discover handmade items unique to the region.

Also known as Nuranang Falls, this impressive waterfall near Jang drops from a height of 100 metres and is surrounded by lush greenery. A small hydel plant nearby generates electricity for local use, adding practical importance to this scenic spot.

Jang Waterfalls

Dating back over 600 years, the 100-metre Chaksam Bridge is an iron suspension bridge built by Tibetan monk Thangtong Gyalpo. Connecting the villages of Kitpi and Mukto across the Tawang Chu river, it is no longer in use. However, this engineering marvel offers stunning Himalayan views and remains a site of cultural and spiritual significance.  

Great Chaksam Bridge

This glacial lake gets its name from the Pankang tree which was once found in abundance in the region and can be accessed only in summers.  Surrounded by high-altitude grasslands and alpine flora, PTSO changes colour with the seasons and offers a peaceful outing for nature lovers and photographers, while leisurely strolling across rhododendron trails. 

Pangkang Teng Tso (Ptso) Lake

Formed after an earthquake, Shong-Tser or Sangetser Lake is dotted with tree stumps that rise from its still waters. Set against dramatic peaks, the lake is known for its quiet beauty and is a peaceful stop on the route to Bumla Pass.

Located at over 4572 metres, Bumla Pass is a high-altitude military outpost on the India-China border. Visitors need a special permit to enter, but the journey offers incredible adventure on snow-covered terrain with occasional glimpses of cross-border military exchanges and an insight into military life.

This picturesque site features 108 natural waterfalls, rooted in Tibetan legend. According to local folklore, the falls emerged from a prayer rosary thrown by Guru Padmasambhava. Located just 250 metres away from the Indo-Tibet border, the area is as culturally significant as it is naturally breathtaking. 

Chumi Gyatse Falls

With wide fields, remote villages and glorious views of the Gorsam Chorten Monastery, Zemithang Valley offers a journey through one of the most pristine and secluded regions of Arunachal Pradesh.  This untouched Himalayan gem is dotted with breathtaking hiking trails and mountain roads for biking.
