Vivanta Thiruvananthapuram

Located beside Padmanabhaswamy Temple, this 18th century mansion was built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal of the Travancore dynasty. Made of teakwood, rosewood, marble and granite, it is a brilliant example of traditional Kerala architecture and has an impressive collection of royal artifacts. The name is derived from 122 horse figurines carved in a unique pattern to support the southern roof. Many concerts and events are hosted in the unique Navarathri Mandapam in front of the palace. 

Kuthiramalika Palace Museum

Set in a landscaped area with woodlands, lawns and water bodies, one of Asia’s oldest zoos is home to a wide variety of native and exotic species. The natural setting and thoughtful layout make it a calm space to observe wildlife leisurely. Featuring a vibrant aviary and a renowned reptile house, the zoo is amongst the top family-friendly things to do in Thiruvananthapuram.

A cultural landmark in the city, the museum is named after Lord Napier, the then Governor General of Madras, who was inspired by the architecture of Kerala and commissioned the building in local style with a few Saracenic elements. History lovers can explore 550 exhibits with a vast range of ivory carvings, royal collectibles, wooden sculptures, bronze images and more than 5000 ancient coins. A separate gallery within the museum displays the exquisite works of world-famous artist Raja Ravi Varma, who was part of the royal family of Travancore. 

Napier Museum

Located in the Thiruvananthapuram Museum compound, this gallery features a collection of approximately 1100 traditional and contemporary paintings, including 400-year-old Tanjore miniature paintings as well as historical manuscripts. Apart from the work of Travancore masters, you can browse paintings from the Mughal, Rajput, Rajasthani and Tanjore schools of art. The gallery also pays homage to the 20th century Bengal School of Art that revolutionised Indian painting with a fusion of traditional techniques and modern sensibilities.   

Shri Chitra Art Gallery

Located 12 kilometres from the city, where the backwaters meet the sea, this serene lakefront park offers landscaped gardens, walking paths and installations. Visitors can hire pedal boats or speedboats and enjoy a picnic. The village also has a separate children’s park and floating cafe run by the state tourism department. 

Veli Tourist Village

Accessible by boat, this quiet island near the southern edge of the state features meandering waterways and mangrove forests, offering the best Kerala backwaters experience. Couples and families can cruise along the waters in an eco-friendly houseboat for an up-close look at local fishing villages and rural life. 

Poovar Island Backwaters

Also known as Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium, it showcases a diverse collection of marine life, including rare species of fish, corals and other aquatic organisms, offering fascinating insights into marine biodiversity for visitors of all ages. 

Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium

With a stunning crescent-shaped shoreline composed of three adjacent beaches - Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach, and Samudra Beach - this is a haven for sunbathing, swimming, surfing and parasailing among other adventurous things to do in Thiruvananthapuram. The beach is lined with shacks offering local dishes like grilled fish. The evenings come alive with vibrant local markets and cultural performances. 

Kovalam Beach

Also known as Jatayu Nature Park, this striking structure is built atop a hill in Chadayamangalam in Kollam district. Its exterior is the world’s largest bird sculpture, that of the mythological bird Jatayu from the Ramayana. The park features a 6D theatre, digital audio-visual room, cable car and an ayurvedic cave resort. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy paintball, laser tag, archery, bouldering, rock climbing and air rifle shooting. Blending art, mythology and  technology, the park also incorporates rainwater harvesting and solar power.
